Toho Shokudo
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located in Minami Ward, Kyoto, Toho Shokudo serves affordable, hearty classic canteen fare, from crisp, flavorful fried chicken and grilled meats to soup-centered set meals packed with ingredients.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The signature karaage set meal at Toho Shokudo brings an instant sense of satisfaction the moment the tray arrives. The oversized pieces of deep-fried chicken come wrapped in a light, crisp batter reminiscent of tempura, encasing richly seasoned, juicy meat. It pairs easily with the standard portion of rice, which is notably generous in its own right, and comes accompanied by a bowl of soup loaded with ingredients.
The set-meal roster extends well beyond fried chicken. Diners can choose from options like yakiniku or pork ginger stir-fry glazed in sweet and savory sauces, substantial tonkatsu, and comforting, home-style sets built around tonjiru pork soup or miso soup. The diner also offers classic canteen staples à la carte, including curry rice, katsu curry, fried rice, tenshinhan, various udon bowls, and chuka soba noodles, making it easy to assemble a filling meal whatever the mood.
Inside, table seating is complemented by counter seats, creating a relaxed space with touches of the Showa era that feels welcoming whether you are stopping in for a solo meal or taking a break from work. Operating from late morning through the late afternoon, the shop accepts cash only, so having yen notes or coins on hand is essential.
